The Official Breed Standard

Our By-Laws and Constitution require Club members to accept the Breed Standard as approved by The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) as the only standard of excellence by which purebred basset hounds shall be judged in Canada. These guidelines reflect the official breed criteria, ensuring that every movement and trait honours the centuries-old legacy of these remarkable scent hounds.

Origin

The Basset Hound comes from France where its name means “low set” – a perfect description for this short-legged dog that appears to be ‘all ears.’ Historians believe he may have descended from the now-extinct St. Hubert Hound. Sportsmen work the breed in packs to trail hare and deer where the Basset’s low, sturdy frame is well suited for moving through dense cover. It is believed that George Washington once owned a pair of Bassets presented to him by the Marquis de Lafayette.

Temperament & Activity

Mild in temperament, the Basset is a dependable friend and companion. Don’t let the mournful expression and the languorous appearance fool you. Like any good hound, it only takes a whiff of an interesting scent to get him off and running. He’s capable of great endurance and can cover a great deal of distance in a short time. Though he adapts well to either city or country living, he requires a daily walk or the equivalent exercise.

Size

Just because the breed is expected to measure in at approximately 14 in (36 cm) at the shoulder, don’t think of it as a ‘small’ dog. The long-bodied Basset is a substantial dog that may weigh as much as 60-70 lb (27-31.5 kg).

Coat, Colour & Grooming

The coat is hard, smooth and short. The Basset comes in any of the Foxhound colours – black, tan and white, or any of these in combination. A weekly rubdown with a bristle brush or hound mitt takes care of the coat. But those soulful eyes and sweeping ears should be checked regularly and kept clean of foreign bodies that might cause irritation.

Vital Health Monitoring

Basset Hounds are a robust breed, though we emphasize vigilant care for ear health, nail trims, joint maintenance, and strict weight management to ensure their vitality and longevity.

Nurturing Stewardship

Our daily care principles focus on weekly ear cleaning and consistent grooming. Given their low stature, we advocate for keeping their coats and skin folds clean and dry.

Training & Connection

We champion patient, reward-based training that respects the Basset’s scent-driven nature. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key to building a harmonious lifelong bond.
